The best pajamas for bigger baby boys

The best baby pajamas for BIGGER baby boys

November 8, 2013 8 comments Article

We love baby pajamas around here – the full footie, long sleeve kind made out of the softest cotton. They are a necessity for my son, Grayson because of my sleep habits. I can’t sleep without the air conditioning on 72 degrees and poor Grayson has the coldest room in the house despite us closing the air duct into his room. To make up for it, he gets bundled up every night and tucked in with warm blankets.

The biggest problem we have with pajamas is finding ones that will fit his chunky thighs. Three weeks away from his first birthday, Grayson has been in the 90th percentile for weight and baby boy pajamas are usually very small. Our bedtime ritual became a struggle as my husband and I tried to squeeze our wiggly son’s sausage-y thighs into their pajama casing. After much trial and error, I’m sharing my list of some of the best baby pajamas we found for bigger baby boys.

THE HITS

1. Little Me

Our Little Me Monkey Footie is well worn. This is the only pajama that lasted well past the specified age. Grayson wore his 6M size until he was about 10 months old. This one-piece footie is made from super-soft cotton with little monkey appliques on the front and feet. Check out their adorable selection. It makes me wish my little guy was still little! $16.00.

2. carter’s

I have mixed feelings about carter’s. I received one of their cotton pj’s as a gift and loved it. Going back to purchase more, I only found polyester microfleece or jersey and too-tight cotton 1-piece pajamas. If you can find the soft terry cotton pj’s, please get them. They last for a long time and are comfy and adorable. I loved this crabby jammie, with an applique crab on the tush. The 9 month size lasted us until he was 10 months old. $12.00

3. Burt’s Bees Baby

Burt’s Bees coveralls are 100% organic cotton, with quality construction. They are super-soft and roomy for our little guy. The pair I have buttons from the back, unlike most pajamas. This took a little getting used to (my husband dressed him backwards one night), but they are easy to snap even the wiggliest baby into. I recommend all of their clothing and wish I had purchased more. $13.95 – $29.95

4. Luca Charles (not pictured)

I love Luca Charles’ jersey long sleeve rompers in waffle-weave knit. They are lightweight, soft and come in bright colors like Buttercup, Smokey Red and Blue Spruce. I purchased an 18-24 M size for my 11-month-old and he has plenty of room to grow. $77.00  – $80.60

THE MISSES

5. carter’s (top grouping)

In desperation for pajamas (Grayson outgrew them so fast!), I went to my local Carter’s and purchased 3 pair of their 1-piece jersey pj’s. They look adorable, but the material is rough and a lint-magnet. He outgrew the 12M size just before he reached 11 months of age, and has almost outgrown the 18M size. $20.00

6. Sweet Peanut

I love Sweet Peanut’s bright, graphic prints in 100% organic cotton. I love them so much, I purchased from them three times, only to have the clothes worn once or not at all. My last purchase was of a playsuit, size 18-24M for my 11 month-old. After one wash, it shrunk and I gave it away to a friend. $29.50

7. Gerber

This 12M size, 100% cotton monkey 1-piece barely fit my 7-month-old.  To their credit, Gerber has a large selection and a few sets fit my younger baby well, but as he got older, they were too tight for his legs. $9.99 – $13.99

8. Leveret (not pictured)

I tried 3 pairs of Leveret pajamas. Even when I purchased sizes much larger than my son, the thighs were too snug for him to comfortably wear. Every time we tried to get his jammies on, it was a struggle trying to get the zipper up. I like Leveret’s bold prints, but wasn’t impressed with the fabric quality. $12.99

9. Boker & Laila (not pictured)

I purchased my Boker & Laila pj’s from Zulily. I loved the karate chop graphic and soft cotton. Unfortunately, my big baby boy’s chunky legs failed to fit in them after wearing them only once. He outgrew the 12M size at 7 months and I added yet another pajama to the donate pile.
